Greenlight laser prostate surgery utilises a powerful laser that vaporises the prostate cells, minimising bleeding, one of the significant risks of conventional prostate surgery. It is also referred to as photo-selective vaporisation (PVP). It is used to treat large prostates that block the outlet of the bladder, causing urinary symptoms, referred to as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It is especially useful in men on anticoagulation who are at higher risk of bleeding.
Greenlight laser prostate surgery results in a shorter hospital stay and catheterisation time compared to a standard transurethral resection of the prostate.
Dr Beattie is currently the only urologist in the Newcastle and Hunter area who offers greenlight laser prostate surgery and is happy to discuss if it is the right procedure for you.
